about us

The Gowen family of St. Simons Island bought the Satilla Lodge property in 1985. The property was completely wooded so Long Bluff Road had to first be cut from Bailey Mill Road to the edge of the Satilla River where The Lodge was built. The Lodge, a two-story cabin built from yellow pine, cypress, and oak, was finished in 1995. All the wood was harvested from storm-fallen trees on the property. A portable sawmill was brought onsite to make the boards. Other unique features of The Lodge include a ballast rock fireplace, large pickle-barrel tables, a 12-ft full taxidermy alligator, and a huge screened in porch facing the Satilla River.

Since then, The Gowen family has grown to include 11 grandchildren, all who love to visit the Satilla Lodge. With this many people, we needed more lodging. In addition to the Lodge, there are two treehouses and one cabin on stilts available for family and now you!
